Antinous as Dionysus Bust head Greek Statue Sculpture Cast Marble Copy

$90,70

Our bust is a copy (in smaller scale) of a marble portrait head of Antinous which is exhibited in the British Museum.  Antinous is shown here as the Greek god Dionysus, wearing a wreath of ivy. The original head was found in 1770 built into a late antique wall on the Gianicolo hill in Rome, with other fragments of the statue.

Antinous was a Greek youth and a favorite or beloved of the Roman emperor Hadrian. He was deified after his death, being worshipped in both the Greek East and Latin West, sometimes as a god (theos) and sometimes merely as a hero.
