Our bas relief is based on the Jockey of Artemision, a large Hellenistic bronze statue of a young boy riding a horse, dated to around 150–140 BC. It is a rare surviving original bronze statue from Ancient Greece and a rare example in Greek sculpture of a racehorse. Discovered in the Artemision shipwreck off the coast of Cape Artemision, it depicts a horse and rider. Thought to represent either a god or a hero, the identity remains uncertain. The statue showcases exceptional skill in bronze casting, capturing the dynamic movement of both horse and rider. The rider, likely a young male, exudes strength and vitality. The Artemision jockey is hailed for its realism and attention to detail, showcasing the mastery of Hellenistic sculptors in conveying both artistic beauty and anatomical precision.
