This vase is a replica of a private collection sold by Christie’s. Hand painted with attention to detail.
The vase has two performances with athletes preparing for the Pentathlon, which was part of the Olympic Games. One of the performances depicts an Athenian athlete ready to throw a javelin next to a boy from Africa holding two dumbbells. The Athenian is taller and bigger next to the African. The participation of an athlete in a public place was a privilege that was generally limited to Athenian citizens. The explanation for the African man’s presence is that he was probably “the son of a prominent African or a high-ranking official. And it was this social status that probably allowed him to participate in the struggles. ”
